About Families & Eating Disorders
An eating disorder is a serious mental illness, where eating and body weight or shape become an unhealthy focus of someone's life. These disorders can destroy a person's quality of life and undermine family relationships.
Common misconceptions are that an eating disorder is merely a phase, a diet gone wrong or an attention seeking attempt.
It is crucial that eating disorders are treated seriously and that assistance from eating disorder specialists is sought. Early intervention is the most effective way to facilitate full recovery, especially for young people.
Eating disorders can affect anyone in any age group, from childhood to mature-aged people. They tend to affect more women than men, and are most common in young women in their adolescence.
Eating disorders have many causes, but are often linked to a person's feelings of anxiety, low self-worth, depression, fear of change, or loss of control over their life.
Eating disorders are treatable. With support from health professionals and loved ones, such as parents, siblings and friends, recovery is certainly possible - for anyone. Understanding, patience, clear communication, consistency and unconditional love are just some of the fundamental elements needed to support recovery.
This Speaking from Experience DVD offers first-hand accounts from nine people living with an eating disorder in the family. They discuss the impact the eating disorder has had on their lives, how they manage the illness and the type of support provided.
'It's not just about the child starting to eat. It's about you learning how to help them to eat. That's a different role to one I've ever experienced before. So, you need help.' - Carol
