About Type 2 Diabetes
This Speaking From Experience DVD offers firsthand accounts from seven people living with Type 2 diabetes. They discuss the impact that diabetes has had on their lives.
Diabetes is a condition where there is too much glucose in the blood. Glucose, a form of sugar, is the main source of fuel for our bodies. It comes from foods containing carbohydrate.
In people with diabetes, blood glucose levels are higher than normal because the body does not produce enough insulin and often cannot use insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone needed for glucose to enter the cells and be converted to energy.
Approximately 85 per cent of people with diabetes have Type 2, which usually develops in adults over the age of 45 years but is increasingly occurring at a younger age. It is more likely in people with a family history of Type 2 diabetes or from particular ethnic backgrounds. Being overweight and inactive also increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes, as insulin becomes less effective at controlling blood glucose levels. This is often referred to as 'insulin resistance'.
Type 2 diabetes is managed with regular physical activity, healthy eating and loss of excess weight. Some people may need tablets and/or insulin injections in addition to lifestyle changes.
I'm a busy Mum, I work fulltime, I don't let it stop me .. I still do everything I did beforehand only in moderation these days. Toni
