About Families & Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition in which there is too much sugar in the blood. Children with diabetes usually have Type 1 diabetes, in which the pancreas doesn't make insulin. It is one of the most common chronic diseases in children. Treatment relies on effective control of blood sugar levels to avoid the possibility of serious complications in later life, such as kidney and eye damage, and heart disease. This means daily insulin injections and regular, healthy meals that eliminate certain foods.

Although diabetes cannot be cured, it can be treated. With family support, daily care and treatment, your child with diabetes can lead a healthy, active, and fun-filled life.

'Speaking From Experience' offers first hand accounts from young people with Type 1 diabetes and their parents. View the contents of this DVD online at www.realtimehealth.com

"I think we have always remained really calm, saying this is how it is, there is nothing we can do about it. This is life and you are going to have to accept it and if we do all of the right things, she will stay well." SALLY
