About Asthma in Adults
Asthma is an inflammatory condition of the airways which causes them to narrow in response to a wide range of trigger factors. The narrowing is caused by muscle constriction, inflammation of the lining of the airways and excess mucus production. Common symptoms are coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and difficulty in breathing.
If an asthma episode is severe, a person may need emergency treatment to restore normal breathing. Although asthma can cause severe health problems, in most cases treatment can control it and allow a person to live a normal and active life.
In this 'Speaking From Experience' seven adults offer candid accounts of their experiences surrounding diagnosis, impact on lifestyle, medication, self management and their thoughts on the future. Preview the Adult Asthma video online at RealTime Health.
"I still have a tendency, if I start getting slowly wheezy in a situation, I will go out to the toilet to have a quick puff of the Ventolin and come back in again, so people won't know, which is pretty insane behaviour!"
